><> Wake Up to Trade Justice! by Lucy Betts
+-----------------------------+-----------------------------+
On Friday 15th April 2005 over 25,000 people descended on
London to make their voice heard about wanting Trade Justice.
This is a call for poorer countries to be allowed not to have
to open up their markets to free trade where surplus goods
from developed countries are “dumped” on developing economies
with disastrous effects on the local farmers. This benefits
rich countries but is harmful to poorer countries.
There was a programme of events going on throughout the night
from a service in Westminster Abbey to cafes and vigils – all
highlighting the need for Trade Justice for those in
developing countries. This was organised by the Trade Justice
Movement, which is a coalition of over 60 organisations
including aid agencies, environment and human rights
campaigns, fair-trade organisations, trade unions, faith and
consumer groups.
Wheatley and Cuddesdon Christians were represent at the rally
and Kevin and I were very privileged to take part and be at
Westminster Abbey where Vanessa Redgrave and Pete
Postlethwaite were part of the service doing readings and
Ronan Keating and Beverley Knight sang solos – all focusing
on the need for trade justice. It was amazing to enter the
ancient building of the Abbey to the sound of the Umubano
drummers from Rwanda and after the service we joined the
rally outside Whitehall and a minutes silence at midnight to
remember those who suffer because of trade injustice. There
were so many people it was hard to get into any of the café’s
provided in some of the large churches but it was good to see
so many people rallying to highlight this cause. This event
in London was part of a Global Week of Action for Trade
Justice, which included events in over 80 countries. If you
would like to learn more about the Trade Justice Movement
look at the website www.tjm.org.uk
Trade Justice is one of the key calls of MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY
and you can find more about this @ www.makepovertyhistory.org
On 2nd July there is a rally in Edinburgh to highlight to the
leaders of the G8 countries this campaign and if you are
interested to take part please contact me as Christian Aid
are aiming to provide a train from Oxford to Edinburgh.
And don't forget Christian Aid week in May, and the launch
evening on May 4th! Lucy Betts Tel: 01865 875436

Revd Dr Mark D Chapman (Vice principal of Ripon College, and
Curate of All Saints, Cuddesdon) has a new book "Blair's
Britain" (£10.95, DLT 0232526036), which was reviewed as
follows in Christianity Magazine:
http://www.christianitymagazine.co.uk/
"A robust and intelligent critique of the change in the
political landscape under Tony Blair's leadership, which
reflects the author's commitment to Christian socialism and
his view that New Labour are controlled by a new agenda.
Looks at: community, spin, management style and pluralism in
the light of September 11. Offers alternative ways forward
for Christian politics."
